Abstract:

The Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest (RMIP) “Ría de Cedeira”, implemented in 2009, comprises the internal waters of the Ría Cedeira. Within the scope of the marine reserve are three areas with different degrees of protection, a reserve, two areas of special protection, and an area marina. This study characterizes the distribution and abundance of fish in different areas of protection in order to monitor the possible effect that the degree of protection exerted on them.

Using a BACI-type design (before-after-control-impact) are established, depending on their degree of protection, 6 sampling stations. Seasonally, from 2008 to 2010, we determined the abundance of species through visual census conducted by scuba divers along fixed transects of 100m in length.

We analyzed the spatial and temporal differences in fish communities at different levels of protection, type of substrate and time of year, through nonparametric multivariate techniques, using the statistical package PRIMER v.6 (Clarke & Warwick, 2001). Furthermore, accumulation curves were made using the ESTIMATES program (Colwell, 2009) to determine species richness in each of the study areas.

The congress was really social-oriented and during four days topics such as poverty alleviation, fishing rights, wellbeing, fisher’s livelihood, resilience, agency, gender issues, management and governance, community-based management, bycatch among many others were discussed.

Our contribution to the congress were two presentations on the topic of bringing scientific provision at the local level with the help of ‘barefoot ecologists’ and the like, and in the particular case of the technical assistants in Galicia.

Organized by IPIMAR, Instituto de Investigação das Pescas e do Mar, the workshop’s aim is to define common monitoring methodologies to allow comparisons between MPAs performance within the EU Atlantic Arc Area. The working sessions are devoted to indicators covering environmental aspects (e.g. biodiversity; habitat functioning) and socioeconomics (fisheries and other activities) with focus on relevant monitoring methodologies in use in MAIA partners’ countries.

European Marine Protected Areas in the Atlantic Arc (MAIA) project aims to develop a network of MPA managers through the dissemination of methodologies and tools.

The deadline for registration is fixed by the end of this week, Oct. 29th. No fee is required to attend the Workshop. However, due to the limited number of available place, the registration is subject to later confirmation.

Entre el 6 y el 10 del pasado mes de septiembre asistí a la XVI edición del SIEBM para presentar una comunicación oral sobre los resultados de nuestra experiencia de telemetría con congrios, lubinas y maragotas.

Después de una larga semana de charlas, conferencias y pósteres, la organización posibilitó una inmersión en el nuevo Parque natural de Serra Gelada (más información aquí). La inmersión era profunda (rozando los -40 m) y la idea era reunir a un grupo heterogéneo de especialistas en flora y fauna para realizar un inventario semicuantitativo de los organismos presentes en la zona.

El P. N. de S. Gelada es un parque marítimo-terrestre, pero no dispone aún de figuras efectivas de protección marina. Los resultados del inventario realizado servirán para ser incluidas en el Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de la Comunidad Valenciana y podrán ser usados para implementar dichas medidas.

La zona de la inmersión se conoce como La Llosa. Una pequeña plataforma rocosa situada a unos -10 m con una fuerte caída en sus laterales. Una segunda llosa en la mitad del recorrido nos conduce hasta los -40. Allí abajo se asienta un bonito grupo de bonitas gorgonias Paramunicea clavata. Estas gorgonias presentan aquí un fuerte color amarillo (normalmente son rojas).

La Llosa está cerca de la Isla de Benidorm y desde allí pudimos contemplar los cantiles de la Serra Gelada y de los edificios de Benidorm (las consideraciones acerca de su modelo constructivo las dejaré para otra ocasión).

Una bonita colonia de Paramunicea clavata, a -40 m, después de la Segunda Llosa.

Un grupo de gorgonias, Paramunicea clavata sobrevolado por un banco de castañuelas, Chromis chromis.

Las hembras de Parablennius pilicornis hacen aquí juego con las gorgonias.

Tres colas Anthias anthias entre las grietas del fondo a unos -20 m.

Anthias anthias, Chromis chromis y Serranus cabrilla, a unos 20 m de profundidad, entre ambas llosas.

Abundan a todas las profundides las cabrillas Serranus cabrilla. Curiosamente no observé ningún S. scriba, normalmente más frecuentes en el Mediterráneo.

Este sargo, Diplodus sargus nos escoltó curioso entre las abundantes castañuelas, Chromis chromis durante los primeros metros de la inmersión.

Los sargos se presentaron sobre todo en los primeros -20 m.

Digital narratives and eco-media: An artistic experimentation in coastal communities

We will present the process of creating digital narratives as an artistic experimentation in a coastal community. In a socio-ecological context, the exploration of place is a fundamental aspect of the narrative and experimental geography arise as the conceptual and practical framework. This artistic project was developed in Garapuá, a coastal location in Brazil (Bahia), in which local teenagers develop collaborative narratives of their territories using a combination of technologies and media such as: GPS, videos, photos, audio, texts, mapping and blogging. El mismo día de la clausura presenté una comunicación oral (cuya presentación puede visualizarse a continuación) acerca de las tendencias a largo plazo en las abundancias y tamaño corporal de las comunidades de peces costeros gallegos. Nuestra intención (de Juan Freire, coautor y la mía propia) es aportar datos que permitan recuperar la perdida línea de referencia original (acerca de las biomasas de los océanos pre-pesquerías industriales).

Abstract: The Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest Os Miñarzos (Galicia, NW Spain) is the first marine protected area declared in the whole Iberian Atlantic coast. Although administrative declaration took place on May 2007, it did not become effective until December 2007. The reserve has an extension of 2074 ha and it is made up by two no-take zones (where it is forbidden to practise any activity, excepting scientific research), and by a partially protected area, where restrictive rules about fishing and gathering shellfish were instaured.

This study describes the distribution and abundance of the epibenthic megafauna in the different zones of the reserve to monitor the possible future effects of the protection measures. Here we present our first year monitoring results, which establish the baseline conditions to test the magnitude of the protection effects in the years to come.

We have employed a BACI design (Before-After-Control-Impact), contempling three different level protection zones and uses: a closed area, a partially protected area, and an adjacent non-protected area (control zone). For these three zones species abundance and distribution were estimated by means of 100 m long transects. Two different transect sampling took place in each zone, covering sandy and rocky substrates respectively. Species abundance and distribution have been seasonally estimated in each zone. A SCUBA diver identified and counted the epibenthic megafauna in situ inside a frame of 0.25 m2 each 10 m. Species that could not be identified in situ were photographed or brought to the laboratory for identification.

We analysed the spatial and temporal differences in the composition, diversity and abundance of the epibenthic megafauna assemblages between the zones, in function of protection level, type of substrate, and season of the year.
